You Look Prettier When You Smile

      Written by TheHonestToddler

      Dear mama,

It’s not your birthday but this poem is for you. It’s just something to think about. Nobody’s perfect.

      love, your HT

You Look Prettier When You Smile

      Thanks for coming last night

It’s nice to know someone cares

      My blanket was twisted

And I thought I heard bears

      You whispered promises and threats

      For, LOL, quite a while

      But next time remember

You look prettier when you smile

      There’s no need for scowls

      When I need midnight water

      Dehydration’s a thing

Weren’t you once a young daughter?

      Please bring the right cup

I could drain the whole Nile

      Relax your face, mama

You look prettier when you smile

      What’s that in the hall?

It smells bad and looks fudgy

Was it caused by a child so beautiful and pudgy?

Why name names? Let’s move on.

The poop’s deep in the tile

Grab the Lysol but keep in mind

You look prettier when you smile

I was dressed head to toe

      Despite putting up a fight

      We wrestled with pants

It took all of your might

Now my clothes can be found

      In a haphazard pile

      Are you mad? Hey mom:

You look prettier when you smile

You are my angel day in and day out

But angels don’t swear and they definitely don’t shout

So when we’re together and I do something vile

Keep the crazy eyes in check

You look prettier when you smile

Thanks for the reminder! I’ll try to do better tonight at 3 am when the water request comes. May I ask why fresh water poured at 11 pm right before I go to bed is not good enough for my toddler to consume at 3 am? Even when I add ice cubes?

Don’t you know that it’s “dirty water” if it didn’t JUST come out of the tap? At least that’s what our oldest toddler tells us.

I think “new water” is desired because after you wash a plastic cup a bunch of times, it picks up the taste of soap. So when the water is in there for a few hours, it tastes soapy. At least, that’s the rationale I give myself at 3am….

Oh, I am dreading the ‘new water’ request. Right now we’ll say, “Oh, no, let’s get a new one…” when she finds a random sippy cup with some ‘leftovers’ – we’re accidentally training her to ask for new water!

          I didn’t sleep for the 1st 16 months… Now @ 22 months, I get MAYBE 3 uninterrupted nights a week… Good luck, Mamas!! :-)
P.S. if one more stranger old lady tells me in public that I should sleep when he sleeps (i.e. This alleged “nap time”), I will throw a tantrum that would make any HT proud… Like I have NOTHING else that has to be accomplished in life when he’s not awake & thwarting all activity that doesn’t center around him…. Lol.

Thank you HT for helping me understand my beautiful boys and find the silver lining in all the craziness they bestow upon me. “Angels don’t swear and they definitely don’t shout” is my new mantra.

I love you HT. You always make me smile. And I love reading the comments that get posted on all of your blogs because it makes me feel like I’m not the only mom in the world going through this stuff. My 3 year old has not gotten to the fresh water stage. Thank GOD my little man has been sleeping for 12 hours straight since he was about 6 months old. I got so lucky with him and any new mom who needs tips on how to get this done, don’t ask because I really don’t know how it happened :)

HT, I think there are a few other things you could do to “up your game” in reminding your mama that she looks prettier when she smiles. I have 3 boys, and 1 is 3 years old. They (especially the 3 year old) really help to remind me to keep smiling.
      1) Poop in the middle of the family room floor. This is truly a treat for all to see. Make sure to do it while mama and daddy have friends over for a party.
      2) I know you are a true artist in the making. Use Sharpie pens and show your true creativity. Do this on leather couches, walls, and cabinets. It really makes mama smile and realize what a Picasso you truly are.
      3) About toys that you no longer have any use for: place those in the back of the gas fireplace. Don’t tell anyone. Let mama and daddy turn on the fireplace. The show is amazing! And the smell takes weeks to get out of the house. Think of it as being like one of those awesome candles that adults burn all the time. You are just trying to assist in helping the house smell better.
      Thanks,
      Mom to 3 boys

Spurred by memories triggered by the last couplet on disrobing toddlers, next on the old drawing

board; locking clothing. Wrestle it on, adjust during the least violent of the child’s squirms, and

      >clik< they're locked in place. Only a paramedic's scissors will get them off now, without the key!

he he he. Parents, remember it is only for a time, then it will be over or on to other things. We can all handle it if we know it has an end. Reminds me when I took my toddler nephew to church, and he disrobed down to his socks when I was not looking.
